My painting "Gators" which won one of the top awards in the NWS Members Exhibit was published on the May 1, 2016 cover of the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association. After appearing on the cover, prints of "Gators" have been very popular with University of Florida Alumni and I arranged to gift the original painting to the UF for display in their permanent collection in Jan 2017. This painting was voted one of the top 25 cover artworks over the last 50 years and was published August 2023 in the "JAVMArt Jubilee: Celebrating 50 Years of Our Favorite Cover Art".

In Sept 2020, I was one of a number of artists doing a demo at the Florida Watercolor Society Online Virtual Convention. The demo was entitled "Tips and Techniques in Plein Air Journaling in Watercolor and Pen/Ink". In Sept 2023, I was asked to do a live demo on the same topic at the FWS annual exhibit/workshops which I showed some sketches from my recent trip to the Amazon and Iceland.

In Sept 2021, I spent a week in Paris...beautiful weather and I was able to wander the city on foot and did many entries in my plein air journal. After that, I toured from Barcelona to Monte Carlo and then from Athens to Istanbul where I continued my travel journaling. My son Rick and I made it to the interior of the Amazon in March 2023.

I now have a book published on this topic which is titled "Plein Air Journaling in Watercolor and Pen and Ink". Rather than being a "how to" book, it is a book that hopefully will encourage other artists to try journaling by showing sketches and explaining how each one becomes a memorable experience!

In March 2024, I went from Hong Kong to Tokyo and did numerous sketches. I did a Plein Air Journaling workshop in New Port Richey, FL in early May 2024.

On May 30, 2024, I had an exhibit/book signing reception at the Gallery of Art 850 in Panama City FL.

In the Spring of 2025, I traveled to the UK and to the Norwegian fjords and in June 2026, I did a land tour of Poland and the 3 Baltic countries. All the countries were spectacular and I was able to continue my travel journaling.

I was one of 3 jurors asked to jury the selection for the 97th Grand National Exhibit of the American Artists Professional League to be held at the Salmagundi Club in NYC in November 2025. In August 2026, I will be the judge of awards for the 2026 Annual Members Online Exhibit for the Louisiana Watercolor Society.

BACKGROUND
Practicing veterinarian in Panama City, Florida since 1972 (retired in 2018 after working part time since 1996). Don has taken many workshops from nationally known artists. Much of his subject matter has come from his extensive travels around the world. He is available to teach workshops on travel journaling on a limited basis. Locally, he has been teaching watercolor classes in his studio since 2002.

ARTIST'S STATEMENT: My paintings frequently employ a combination of realism and impressionism, with a touch of abstract design. My newer paintings including the Animal Series reflects a connection with the animal as if both animal and viewer are aware of the other. In addition, I attempt to apply the illusion of detail in many works so that viewers can use their imagination to complete the image. Sometimes, less is more! Enjoy your tour through the galleries!
